The first day of the road trip - Going from Thessaloniki to Arachova

There’s something magical about road trips through Greece — the shifting landscapes, the hidden towns, and the spontaneous stops along the way. On Friday, September 29, 2023, we set off from Thessaloniki with Arachova as our final destination, and what unfolded was a day full of charming discoveries and mountainous serenity.

Morning Departure from Thessaloniki

Travel in Greece isn’t just about where you're going — it's about the journey itself. Our day began at Agroktima Ioannou, a lovely little fruit market in Thessaloniki — and also our friend’s family-run grocery store. They only sell fresh, seasonal fruits, so we made a quick stop to stock up before hitting the road 🍑🍇🍎 A bag full of juicy peaches, cherries, and crisp apples made the perfect road trip snack. Simple, local, and full of flavor — just how road trips in Greece shoould start. We packed the car and hit the road around 9:30 AM, ready for the drive ahead.

Travel in Greece isn’t just about where you're going — it's about the journey itself.

A Quick Stop in Katerini

Our first pit-stop came in Katerini, where we slipped into a local electronics shop to grab a couple of fresh memory cards—must-haves when a road-trip promises hundreds of photos 📸. The quick detour let us stretch our legs and linger over shelves of books, tech and travel gadgets, turning a long morning drive into an easy mid-day breather. We even managed a speedy hello with relatives who live nearby—only a few minutes, yet plenty to feel re-charged before rolling back onto the highway.

Through the Plains to Farsala

After our stop in Katerini, we continued south through the open plains of Thessaly, heading toward Farsala — a town known for one thing above all: chalvas farsalon.

Nature recovering after Storm Daniel in Thessaly, Greece

We arrived mid-day and made it our mission to try the local specialty. It didn’t disappoint — caramelized on the outside, soft and buttery inside, with that signature texture that makes it totally different from regular halva. We grabbed a couple of portions from a small local shop, and honestly, it was the perfect sugar boost to keep us going on the road. No crowds, no rush — just a sweet pause in a peaceful little town surrounded by fields and sunshine.

The glorious Chalvas Farsalon

On a road trip through Thessaly today, you’ll still see the rippling hills and olive groves that make this corner of Greece so captivating—yet here and there the landscape bears the silent scars of Storm Daniel, which in early September 2023 turned these lush valleys into rushing rivers. The highway out of Karditsa dips over bridges that were rebuilt after floodwaters swept them away, and many of the narrow lanes through Pelion’s mountain villages have been freshly reinforced where torrents carved new gullies in the hillsides.

Nature's Wrath

Locals are quick to point out the humble cafés and family-run inns that opened their doors to stranded travelers and rescue crews alike, and along the Pineios River you can pause at ferries reconnecting communities once cut off by the storm. It’s a reminder that even in the wake of nature’s fiercest moods, the Greek spirit for hospitality—and the breathtaking beauty of its backroads—endures.

Thermopyles

On our way south, we took a detour through the old national road — no rush, just a relaxed drive through the Greek countryside. Sometimes the paradromos (side road) is exactly what you need when the goal isn’t just to arrive, but to enjoy the way there.

The statue of Leonidas

We made a short stop at Thermopyles, the historic mountain pass known for the legendary battle of 480 BC. Standing there, we took a moment to see the statue of Leonidas — a proud reminder of bravery and resilience. It felt symbolic in a way, making a quiet pause in a place that’s echoed through history.

The landscape around Thermopyles

It wasn’t a long stop, but just enough to breathe, look around, and keep moving with fresh perspective.

On the way to arachova - views around Oiti mountain

Nestled in Central Greece, the mountains of Oiti offer a breathtaking escape into nature, especially in September when the landscape is bathed in golden light and the air turns crisp with the promise of autumn. Known for their rich biodiversity and serene trails, Oiti's slopes are carpeted with wildflowers, pine forests, and hidden springs that make every hike a sensory delight.

Views of Oiti

The National Park of Oiti, one of Greece’s lesser-known gems, is ideal for those seeking solitude and scenic beauty without the crowds. Panoramic views from the peaks reveal a patchwork of valleys and villages, while ancient myths whisper through the hills, adding a layer of timeless intrigue to every step.

Parnassos views

As you drive from Oiti toward Arachova, the majestic silhouette of Mount Parnassos gradually dominates the horizon, offering a striking contrast to the softer contours of Oiti. In September, the slopes of Parnassos are still lush and green, dotted with fir trees and rugged limestone outcrops that catch the afternoon sun.

The winding road reveals sweeping vistas of deep valleys and distant peaks, making every turn a scenic experience. This legendary mountain, steeped in ancient mythology, creates a dramatic and unforgettable backdrop for the journey, hinting at the cultural richness and natural beauty that await in nearby Arachova.

Arrival in Arachova

As we wound our way through the mountainous roads, the scenery changed dramatically — rugged cliffs softened into rolling hills dotted with stone houses and crimson-tiled roofs. By 6:41 PM, we rolled into Arachova, just as the golden hour cast a warm glow over the village.

Golden hour moments

One of the town’s most iconic sights, the stone clock tower, stood proudly atop a rocky outcrop — a timeless sentinel watching over Arachova’s narrow lanes and lively squares.

As twilight deepened, we were surprised by a quiet visitor: a curious fox padding confidently through the cobbled streets, a rare and magical moment that made the town feel even more like a page from a storybook.

Our cozy nest for the night, perched on a hillside, offered the perfect blend of alpine charm and modern comfort, with sweeping views of the valley below and the fading silhouette of Mount Parnassos in the distance.

Dinner in Arachova

As evening settled over Arachova, we took a leisurely stroll through its cobblestone streets and found ourselves at a cozy taverna near the village square. Surrounded by the soft hum of local life, we enjoyed a comforting meal of traditional fasolada and tender rooster in red wine sauce, paired with a glass of local wine. It was a simple, hearty dinner — the kind that warms you from the inside out and lingers in memory long after the plates are cleared.

Return to the Hotel

Content and relaxed, we returned to our hillside hotel just after 9 PM. The town had settled into a peaceful hush, the crisp mountain air and emerging stars wrapping the day in a quiet sense of wonder — a perfect close to a journey as rich in atmosphere as it was in scenery.
